Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay immediately was captivated after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be an avenue for action. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through the medium of art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an intern at a small studio. In 1999, she established her own company that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
